On behalf of the Earthquake Engineering Association ofTurkey (EEAT), it is my great honour to invite you to the5th International Conference on Earthquake Engineeringand Seismology (5ICEES), which will be held from 8-11October 2019 at Middle East Technical University (METU)Culture and Convention Center. The organization will behosted by METU Civil Engineering Department.In Turkey, seismic risk is becoming a more serious issuewith ever-increasing building stock, especially in big cities.In addition to this continuous increase, the building stock isalso getting older and more vulnerable to seismic action.Accordingly, the aim of this conference is not only to presentthe recent research studies in earthquake engineering andseismology, but also to discuss the current earthquake-related problems and to exchange ideas for their potentialsolutions.In the fields of earthquake engineering and seismology, therole of novel methodologies, new construction technologies, and smart techniques is becoming more and moreimportant in order to identify seismic hazard and risk in amore realistic manner, to develop a brand new earthquake-resistant design philosophy, and to handle a vast number ofseismically vulnerable existing structures. To this extent,another aim of the conference is to assist the exhibitionand introduction of the new technologies in the area and toshare this knowledge with all the participants.We are looking forward to your participation and support in this conference, which will be held in Ankara, the capital citywith a unique cultural and historical wealth.

Dear Colleagues,We would like to announce that the 5th InternationalConference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology(5ICEES) will be hosted by the Middle East Technical University(METU) Civil Engineering Department. The conference willbe held in Ankara, Turkey, at METU Culture and ConventionCenter from 8-11 October 2019.The International Conference on Earthquake Engineeringand Seismology has been organized every two years since 2011 bythe Earthquake Engineering Association of Turkey (EEAT).The principal aim is to gather all national and internationalresearchers in order to discuss current problems regardingthe earthquake phenomenon, exchange ideas for possible solutions in the short and long term, and facilitatetheir participation in a scientific environment. Since we started this journey as a national conference at METU,Ankara, in 2011, there has been an ever-increasing interestin the conference from Turkey and abroad, with high-quality contributions to the current research in the fieldsof earthquake engineering and seismology. We hope thisinterest will grow even more, and we will experience a successful conference with a considerable number of participants.During the first three days of the conference, presentationsand discussions will be organized through parallel sessionswith the participants from numerous universities, researchunits, governing bodies, and private sector companiesworldwide. Each session will focus on a particular theme.The participants can present their work both in English andin Turkish.The last day of the conference is dedicated to a specialworkshop honoring the retirement of Prof. Haluk Sucuoğlu(METU). Distinguished international and nationalresearchers are invited to this one-day event to give theircompelling talks regarding different aspects of earthquakeengineering and seismology.Further details about the conference and importantdeadlines will be provided in future calls. We lookforward to hosting you next year at METU, Ankara.
